DAN ROBERTS - RENAISSANCE MAN!

IT SEEMS LAST YEARS "SUPER-HAPPY-FUN CFL POOL" CHAMPION HAS MORE GOING FOR HIM THAN GOOD LOOKS AND AN ASTUTE MIND FOR BIG-BALL FOOTBALL.

THIS EXCERPT FROM TODAY'S WINNIPEG FREE PRESS...

TORONTO -- Former Winnipegger Dan Roberts of the Crash Test Dummies isn't just a successful musician -- it turns out he can also do amazing things in the kitchen.

The bassist has won the 2006 Canadian Living Jenn-Air Cook of the Year award, the magazine announced yesterday.

He won a cook-off against three other finalists from across Canada with his recipe for stuffed beef tenderloin with rosti potatoes.

The competition is limited to non-professional cooks. Roberts didn't reveal his identity as a member of the band to the magazine's staff until the night before the cook-off, which took place in June.

"I'm basically a meat and potatoes kind of person," Roberts said in a statement released by the magazine. "I wanted my recipe to be a gourmet meat and potatoes dish."

Roberts has been an enthusiastic amateur chef for about a decade, he said.

The competition involved cooking an original main-course recipe for six, suitable for entertaining.

Roberts wins a kitchen worth at least $10,000 from Jenn-Air.

KUDOS MR. ROBERTS...NOW LETS MAKE SURE HE DOESN'T TAKE OUR CASH AGAIN THIS YEAR.

Here, here! Yes, congratulations is in order. Not only did Mr. Toronto win the Lady of the Year Award for his tuna casarole (or whatever it was), but he also became a dad this week as well. His special lady, Sheri (also a reformed Loserpegger) gave birth to a son on Friday.

The lad's name is Sidney. I suggested a more CLF name such as Shockmain, Geroy or Bashir, but as usual my advice was not sought or heeded. Weeks before the big day, Dan seemed to be favouring the name "Charles Roberts," but changed his mind in the end. I can only speculate that it's because the Bombers suck.

So please join me in congratulating Dan - and the Argos for clinching a play-off spot! (Mr. Toronto would want it that way.)

Signed,
The Koop.
